With the music component in our sports camps becoming a key feature of our ministry it seems logical now that a high energy, kid’s oriented, Christian musical emerge as a new VBS sports related idea or resource offered by UW Sports Ministry.
Utilizing songs from our Game Plan Curriculum and adding key new songs to drive the story line, Game Plan the Musical takes sports camp to “the stage”.
The story line for the children's ministry musical wraps around the adventures of the Sapphire Lakes Tigers’ fall soccer season. The children who play for the Tigers gold level team along with those who perform on their cheer squad are of different ages and genders, and have diverse personalities, talents and skill levels.
The one adult constant is “Coach” Calhoun who is a Christian and member of a local church. He is wise and “old school”, but relates well with the kids. A female teenage cheer coach who is also a Christian, is a good female role model and helps give deeper spiritual insight in the problems the cheerleaders are facing.
Wyatt the captain and best player on the team, sets up and works through the “sports” conflict of the story. He is benched by the coach to allow other players on the team to develop their own skills and not rely only on Wyatt’s skills and leadership. He resists the “game plan” and works it through during the musical.
Sadie, the captain of the cheer squad, works through the “kids” conflict of the story. She is temporarily rejected by her teammates and her best friend because of peer pressure. She finds her way through the issue from Biblical advice that her cheer coach, Jen, gives her.
Anthony is new in town and works through the “life” conflict. His parents are getting a divorce and he finds a new relationship with Christ as the way to deal with the pain.
Game Plan the Musical, is not your typical church musical where everything turns out perfect. The divorce is unresolved at the end of the musical, but other issues do find resolution.
Many have said that sports and music are the two great universal languages of the world. They cross cultural and generational barriers and have a great ability to communicate. Game Plan the Musical combines the best of both worlds at a child’s level yet the truth is poignant and penetrating even for adults.
